Évora 2027: What Local Businesses Should Prepare Now
Évora is European Capital of Culture in 2027, with the official opening on 6 February 2027. For restaurants, cafés, hotels and guesthouses, that means something practical: visitors will plan their trip months ahead, search Google and AI assistants in several languages, and book with whoever shows up first with clear information. Aim to have your website, its languages and your Google Business Profile ready by December 2026.
This guide covers what is known about Évora 2027, a timeline that makes sense for a local business, and the seven things to prepare before February.
What we know about Évora 2027
- The title: Évora is European Capital of Culture in 2027, shared with Liepāja in Latvia. It is the fourth Portuguese city to hold the title, after Lisbon (1994), Porto (2001) and Guimarães (2012).
- The opening: the official ceremony is set for 6 February 2027, with an open-air show staged by director Marco Martins at Rossio de São Brás.
- The theme: "Vagar", the Alentejo word for taking your time. The artistic programme is built around slowing down and wandering.
- The programme: the full 2027 programme has not been published yet and is expected by the end of 2026. Lead-up events are already running in 2026.
- Visitors: Évora tourism officials quoted by Euronews say visitor numbers roughly doubled in earlier Portuguese title years.
Nobody knows yet how many people will come. But even a modest rise changes a lot in a city of around 50,000 people with a historic centre you can cross on foot.
A realistic timeline
October to December 2026: prepare. This is when the slow work gets done: a new or fixed website, versions in other languages, photos, your Google Business Profile. Google needs several weeks to find and show new pages, and a Starter site takes 2–3 weeks to go live.
January 2027: check. Test everything on a phone, in English and in Spanish. Make sure your hours, phone number and address match on the site and on Maps. Ask regular customers for reviews.
6 February 2027: opening. In the weeks around the opening, anyone searching "restaurant near me" or "hotel in the centre of Évora" should already find your business with the right details.
Through 2027: update. Once the programme is out, add what is relevant: longer hours on event days, special menus, stay packages.
The seven things to prepare
1. Your Google Business Profile
It is the first thing a visitor sees when they search on Maps. Check your hours (holidays included), phone, address, the right category and at least ten recent, real photos. Reply to reviews, the negative ones too.
2. A website in your visitors' languages
English is a must. Spanish makes a lot of sense in Évora, an hour and a half from the border. French and German are a good third step. Each language needs its own page, set up so Google shows each person the right version. An automatic translate button is not enough: Google doesn't index those translations.
3. Hours and booking on the first phone screen
A visitor walking through the centre decides in seconds. "Open today until 11pm" and a booking or call button should be visible without scrolling. If you use a reservation system, link the button straight to it.
4. A menu in text, not a PDF
A PDF menu opens badly on a phone and Google barely reads it. A text menu, with prices and in several languages, shows up in searches for dishes. If you want a QR code for the tables, our restaurant menu QR generator is free.
5. Reviews, asked for at the right moment
Reviews weigh heavily on Maps. Ask at the end of a good experience, with a QR code at the counter or on the bill. You can make one with the Google review QR generator.
6. Being found by AI assistants
More and more visitors ask ChatGPT or Gemini "where to eat in Évora". These assistants rely on sites with clear, structured information: address, hours, cuisine, prices. Structured data (schema) and an llms.txt file help. We explain how in structured data and llms.txt for hospitality.
7. Real photos
Photos of your place, your food and your team convince more than stock images. Take them in daylight and use them on both the site and your Google Business Profile.
What to avoid
- Using the official Évora_27 brand without permission. The logo and name belong to the organisation. You can say the city is European Capital of Culture, but don't suggest your business is an official partner if it isn't.
- Promising events that aren't confirmed. Until the programme is out, talk about the city and your place, not dates that may change.
- Leaving it all for January. In January Google is still discovering new pages, and February's visitors have already booked.
